PLA settings from the data sheets: nozzle, bed, fan, speed and heat limits

Published October 15, 202657 sources

Short answer

Standard PLA data sheets from Bambu Lab, Prusa Polymers and Polymaker list nozzle temperatures between 190 and 230 °C and bed temperatures between 25 and 60 °C, with the part cooling fan on [4, 5, 6]. Heat is the main limit: heat deflection at 0.45 MPa is 55 to 60 °C in the same data sheets, and the Bambu Lab Wiki does not recommend PLA for environments at about 50 °C or higher [2].

Published ranges at a glance

The span of values that makers publish for 45 products (PLA) in the filament database, by grade. Every product, with its source, is listed in the full table below the guide.

What the data sheets recommend

Three manufacturers publish full PLA settings, and their ranges overlap closely. The table pairs each standard PLA with its recommended values.

Retraction 0.6–1.0 mm not published 1–3 mm

Sources: [4, 5, 6].

The Prusa Knowledge Base gives a single starting point for its printers: 215 °C for the first layer, 210 °C after that, and a 60 °C bed [1]. The Bambu Lab Wiki widens the nozzle window to 190–240 °C (±10 °C) for PLA in general [2]. These are starting ranges, not fixed answers. A temperature tower narrows them for a specific spool and printer.

Retraction recommendations differ between the sheets. Bambu Lab’s data sheet lists 0.6–1.0 mm, while Polymaker’s allows 1–3 mm [4, 6]. Prusa notes that PLA is sometimes prone to stringing and oozing and that retraction settings reduce it [1]. The stringing guide covers the test.

Part cooling

PLA data sheets call for strong part cooling. Prusa Polymers specifies 100% fan, and Polymaker’s wiki says to leave the fan at full speed for the best surface, reducing it only if layer adhesion suffers [5, 7]. Bambu Lab’s data sheet simply says to turn the fan on and lists a maximum overhang angle of 55° and a maximum bridge length of 30 mm for PLA Basic [4].

The first layers are the exception. In OrcaSlicer, No cooling for the first (close_fan_the_first_x_layers) switches the fan off for a set number of layers to help bed adhesion, and Full fan speed at layer (full_fan_speed_layer) ramps it up gradually after that [8]. Overhangs and external bridges fan speed raises cooling only on unsupported lines [8].

Build plates and adhesion

PLA prints on PEI, glass, Kapton tape or glue stick, according to Prusa, but each maker has a preferred surface [1]. Prusa recommends the satin or smooth PEI sheet and notes that the smooth sheet works better for parts with a small contact area [1]. On a powder-coated (textured) sheet, Prusa advises lowering Live Z slightly so the filament fills the texture, without going so low that the nozzle damages the sheet [1].

Bambu Lab’s plate table ties the bed temperature to the plate: 35–45 °C on the Cool Plate, and 45–65 °C on the Engineering, Smooth PEI and Textured PEI plates, with glue required on the Engineering Plate [2]. If the first layer lifts, the bed adhesion guide lists the checks in order.

Speed and flow

At high speeds the limit is the volume of filament the hotend can melt per second. OrcaSlicer caps it per filament with Max volumetric speed (filament_max_volumetric_speed) [9]. Polymaker gives PolyLite PLA a recommended ceiling of 15 mm³/s and says it is not designed for high-speed printing [7]. Bambu Lab describes PLA Basic as designed for high-speed printing, with printing speeds up to 250–300 mm/s [4]. The difference between those two products is the subject of the high-speed PLA guide. To convert a volumetric limit into a print speed for a given layer height and line width, use the volumetric speed calculator.

Heat limits

PLA’s weak point is heat. The relevant figures from the three data sheets are close together:

Product HDT at 0.45 MPa HDT at 1.80 MPa Glass transition
Bambu PLA Basic 57 °C 54 °C 60 °C
Prusament PLA 55 °C 55 °C not published
Polymaker PolyLite PLA 60 °C 58 °C 61 °C

Sources: [4, 5, 6].

The Prusa Knowledge Base states that PLA gets soft and deforms above 60 °C [1]. Bambu Lab is more conservative: PLA is not recommended in environments at about 50 °C or higher, where it may slowly soften and deform [2]. The heat resistance comparison lists HDT values across brands.

The same low softening point causes a printer-side problem. In an enclosed printer, a hot chamber can soften PLA above the melt zone and clog the extruder, a failure Bambu Lab calls heat creep [3]. Bambu Lab recommends keeping the chamber at least 10 degrees below the filament’s glass transition temperature [3]. Its plate table recommends opening the front door or removing the top glass cover when the bed is set above 45 °C for PLA [2]. OrcaSlicer stores a Softening temperature (temperature_vitrification) per filament and warns to open the door when the bed is at or above it [10].

Annealing PLA

Annealing raises crystallinity, which can improve strength, stiffness and heat resistance [11]. Bambu Lab warns that annealed PLA parts may deform or warp, especially large or thin parts, and that toughness may drop [11]. For PLA Basic, the suggested annealing temperature is 50–60 °C for 6–12 hours in a forced-air oven, not a kitchen or microwave oven [4].

When PLA is the wrong choice

The sources agree on the cases where another material fits better:

  • Heat. Parts that will sit at 50–60 °C or above are past the limits quoted above [2, 1].
  • Outdoor use. Prusa notes that PLA degrades under UV light and is not suitable for outdoor use [1]. The ASA guide covers a material sold for outdoor parts.
  • Impact and snap fits. Prusa describes PLA as brittle; it tends to break along layers or into shards on impact [1].
  • Food contact. Prusa does not recommend any printed filament for dishes, because layer grooves can harbor bacteria [1].

For tougher or more heat-resistant parts, compare PETG in the PLA vs PETG guide.

Questions

Can a PLA part survive inside a parked car?

The data sheets point against it. Bambu Lab's wiki says PLA is not recommended for environments at about 50 °C or higher, and the Prusa Knowledge Base says PLA softens and deforms above 60 °C [2, 1].

Does PLA need drying before printing?

Bambu Lab lists drying as recommended (55 °C for 8 hours in a blast oven), while the Prusa Knowledge Base notes that PLA does not change its properties much when it takes up humidity [2, 12]. Prusa's table gives 45 °C for 6 hours for Prusament PLA [12].

Why does PLA clog in an enclosed printer?

PLA has the lowest glass transition temperature of the common filaments, so a hot chamber can soften it above the melt zone (heat creep). Bambu Lab recommends keeping the enclosure at least 10 degrees below the filament's glass transition temperature [3].
