Filament heat resistance: HDT and Vicat values from manufacturer data sheets

Published October 15, 202676 sources

Short answer

Heat deflection temperature (HDT) is the temperature at which a loaded test bar bends by a set amount; data sheets report it under 0.45 MPa, 1.8 MPa or both, usually to ISO 75 [1, 2]. Compare values only at the same load. At 0.45 MPa the database spans 50–61 °C for PLA, 64–73 °C for PETG, 73–101 °C for ABS, 88–103 °C for ASA and 101–114 °C for PC, with carbon-fiber nylons reaching the highest values.

By material

The span of values each manufacturer group publishes, computed from the product table below. "Products" counts entries in the database; "reporting" counts those whose maker publishes this value.

What HDT and Vicat measure

Heat deflection temperature (HDT) comes from a bending test: a standard bar carries a fixed load while it is heated, and the reported temperature is where it has bent by a set amount. The data sheets in this database almost always name ISO 75 as the method and state the load: 0.45 MPa, 1.8 MPa, or both [1, 2, 3].

Vicat softening temperature comes from a different test, in which a loaded needle presses into the specimen. Bambu Lab and Polymaker report it to ISO 306 [1, 2]. In this database, Vicat values usually land within a few degrees of the 0.45 MPa HDT for the same product, sometimes above and sometimes below.

Neither number is a maximum service temperature. Both are comparisons under fixed laboratory conditions.

Compare at the same load

A heavier load bends the bar sooner, so a 1.8 MPa HDT is never meant to be compared with a 0.45 MPa HDT. Bambu Lab’s PLA Basic, for example, reaches 57 °C at 0.45 MPa and 54 °C at 1.8 MPa [1]. The table on this page shows the load next to every value, and the summary splits the two loads into separate columns. Where a maker publishes HDT without stating a load, the value appears without one and is left out of the summary columns.

Some data sheets look odd at first glance. Prusament PLA gives the same 55 °C at both loads [3]. Bambu Lab’s PC data sheet lists a higher HDT at 1.8 MPa than at 0.45 MPa; the value is shown as printed, with a note on the brand page, because the two rows may be transposed.

Printed parts are not test bars

Three cautions apply before using any of these values for a real part:

  1. Specimen preparation. Bambu Lab’s PLA Basic sheet states that its test specimens were annealed and dried at 55 °C for 8 hours before testing [1], and Polymaker’s PolyMide CoPA specimens were annealed at 80 °C for 6 hours [5]. A part straight off the printer has not had that treatment.
  2. Geometry and load. Thin walls, sparse infill and a steady load all lower the temperature at which a part creeps or sags. HDT says nothing about a bracket holding weight for weeks in a hot car.
  3. The makers’ own caveats. Polymaker says its typical values are for reference and comparison, not for design specifications or quality control [2], and Prusa Polymers says its results depend significantly on print settings and conditions [3].

Annealing can raise heat resistance

Several makers publish annealing guidance for printed parts. Bambu Lab suggests annealing PLA Basic parts at 50–60 °C for 6–12 hours, warns that parts may deform or warp, and specifies a forced-air oven rather than a kitchen or microwave oven [1]. Polymaker recommends annealing PolyMide CoPA parts at 80 °C for 6 hours [5]. The data sheets do not all publish an HDT after annealing, so this database records only the HDT values as printed.

The ladder, roughly

From the values in the database, at 0.45 MPa:

  • PLA: 50–61 °C. Matte, silk and “tough” variants move a few degrees either way.
  • PETG: 64–73 °C. See PLA vs PETG.
  • ABS and ASA: 73–101 °C for ABS and 88–103 °C for ASA, depending on brand. See ABS vs ASA.
  • PC: 101–114 °C. See polycarbonate.
  • Nylons and fiber-filled engineering grades: the widest spread, because fillers and copolymers vary a lot; the carbon-fiber nylons reach the top of the table. Check the specific product, and see nylon and carbon-fiber filaments.

The summary at the top of the page keeps filled grades (such as PA-CF or PETG-CF) separate from the unfilled material, so a fiber-filled product does not stretch the range of its base plastic.

Print temperature does not predict heat resistance: a filament printed hotter does not automatically hold its shape at a higher temperature. For printing temperatures, use the temperature chart.

Questions

Can a PLA part survive 60 °C if its HDT is 60 °C?

Do not count on it. HDT is measured on a standard bar under a defined load, and makers say their values are for reference and comparison, not design specifications [2, 3]. Prusa's PLA guide says PLA gets soft and deforms above about 60 °C [4].

Why is the 1.8 MPa value lower?

The heavier load bends the bar sooner, so the same plastic reaches the deflection limit at a lower temperature. Bambu Lab's PLA Basic sheet, for example, gives 57 °C at 0.45 MPa and 54 °C at 1.8 MPa [1].
